What Exactly Is the Higher Self and How Does It Relate to Me?
Your Higher Self is your inner spiritual wisdom – the Wise Mind, a part of yourself that you may have yet to uncover. The Higher Self is the accumulation of the positive qualities that make up your character and personality. That is not to say that we don’t all have negative qualities or tendencies – we do – but these characteristics form the other side of our dual positive-negative nature, which we will get into later. We are just not aware of most of our positive characteristics and bringing them to the surface of our awareness allows us to both recognize them and begin to assimilate them into our consciousness and personality. The same is true for our negative nature – we need to come to a point where we understand it but choose not to act on it.
In our culture, we are praised for activities that are expressed outwardly, and that is where we have become accustomed to looking for all the answers. We are not encouraged to look inward and the hidden wisdom that comes from working with the Higher Self. That’s where meditation comes in. By practicing regularly, we will begin to recognize the Higher Self, facilitating a dialogue and starting the process of self-discovery. Through this process, we will be able to integrate our positive nature so that we can have access to it and utilize it during our daily lives. The concept is similar to physical fitness – most of us have the ability to lift fifty pounds but it will require training for us to do so. In this way, meditation is the mechanics of spirituality!
