In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to nurture ourselves with regular practice of self-love. With the constant bombardment of external pressures, it’s easy to lose sight of our true essence, often leading us to experience dissatisfaction, unworthiness, and disconnection.

Self-love is a way to help us remember our worth, enjoy the things that make us unique, and feel more at peace with ourselves. By embracing self-love, we not only foster our own well-being, but also contribute to the collective healing of our world. As we learn to honor our own light, we begin to see the beauty in others and cultivate compassion, empathy, and unity.

Connecting with your Higher Self is an act of self-love that opens the doors to the most worthwhile aspects of life. Our Higher Self grants us access to our deepest inner wisdom and contains all the positive qualities we have accumulated throughout our life’s journey.  When our connection to our Higher Selves is strong, we make better choices, support others, and ultimately co-create a more loving and harmonious world.

Nurturing this precious connection is the greatest thing we can do for ourselves and those around us, but it’s not always clear how we’re supposed to do that. While there are many ways to build and strengthen this bond, understanding and incorporating the idea of open-heartedness into your daily life is a fantastic place to start.

The Role of Open-Heartedness

“Constant use of the heart brings spiritual growth…The disillusions of life are but these finite realities, unchanging and stagnant. With the use of the heart, these disillusions take on a different reality. They are viewed as learning experiences and ways to greater understanding not only of oneself but also of others.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

The heart is so much more than just the seat of love and affection. It is a chalice from which all emotions pour forth. Our willingness to learn, grow, and explore are all directed by our Higher Selves through the power of the heart. When we nurture our hearts and embrace the openness needed to truly grow, we are in essence, embarking on a radical journey of self-love.

Most importantly, the heart is the channel through which we can access our Higher Self. This connection provides us with valuable insights and perspectives that can help us navigate life's challenges and uncertainties with grace and resilience. It empowers us to make choices that align with our highest potential and purpose, fostering a life of fulfillment, authenticity, and inner peace.

As wonderful as its benefits may be, opening the heart is no easy task. It requires great commitment and continuous exploration of our emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. Given that our culture is wary of vulnerability, staying open and available to the communications of our hearts is nothing short of a courageous journey, one that sets the stage for a lifetime of self-love.

Here are five ways connecting to the Higher Self through the heart serves as the ultimate form of self-love.

1. Cultivating Inner Wisdom

“Everyone also has the ability to access the source of wisdom and knowledge. This usually comes through the heart from the Higher Self.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

We often associate wisdom and intelligence with the mind, but this is only half the story. In order to fully access our wisdom, we must use both our minds and our heart. Our mind may remember things, but understanding and comprehension can only come when a thought from the mind is filtered through the heart.

The heart provides information that may be more abstract in nature. You may experience it as a physical wave in the body, a shift in the sensation of the chest, or even as a subconscious visual that you cannot fully grasp. We may have a harder time trusting this intelligence because it is less linear, but this expanded awareness provides new depths of insight when we combine it with the power of the mind.

Nurturing this more intuitive wisdom is inherently an act of self-love. When you build trust with this often-neglected form of internal intelligence, you are honoring all aspects of your being without exception. This builds a more holistic self, one where none of your parts are considered unworthy, and the whole person is loved and accepted.

2. Improved Emotional Processing

“Emotional energy is constant. If the energy becomes negative, it can cloud the heart so that none of the other energies can flow through it freely.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

The heart is where we process our deepest emotions. As emotions emerge through the heart, our hearts color them with an intensity of feeling. The raw emotion of love, for example, can be filtered by our heart in such a way that it is very strong and passionate, or simply peaceful and calm.

If your emotional energy becomes negative, it can cloud the heart so that none of the other energies can flow through it freely. For example, if you are angry and irritated about something, it is very difficult to be inspired or creative, or to show empathy and compassion to those who need it. Learning to recognize, work with, and move beyond these emotions can restore much-needed balance to your life, making it a powerful act of self-love.

3. Enhanced Creativity

“Creative energy is full of vibration that stimulates the person’s senses and thinking.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

Creative energy is a vibrant force that inspires the intellect, conveying ideas and heightening awareness of all possibilities. Furthermore, the practice of creativity nurtures a connection to our Higher Selves, as it often involves tapping into our intuition, imagination, and inner guidance.

While it’s certainly a central element of artistic pursuits, everyone can benefit from practicing their creativity. Regularly putting yourself into a creative flow can lead to profound self-awareness, healing, and transformation. In this way, creativity not only fosters self-love but also contributes to our overall well-being and spiritual growth.

4. New Sense of Purpose (Motivational Energy)

“Motivational energy is something that is unique in the human condition… Used correctly, it, enables us to see all the possibilities and potential of a project or challenge, then motivates us to choose a path and execute it.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

Motivational energy is a quality of the will that helps you accomplish tasks without procrastination. This energy comes directly from your will and can be accessed by linking your heart and will.

We often have the nagging sensation that the things we most want to accomplish are just out of reach. While we may feel inspired or driven to take up a meaningful project or purpose-driven endeavor, our lack of self-worth may be preventing us from prioritizing it. When we embrace the motivation that is accessible through the heart and the Higher Self, we honor our unique gifts and how they appear in our world. Rather than constantly putting off the work you long to accomplish, embrace the self-love needed to let your personal momentum take the lead.

5. Stronger Relationships and Communities

“With the use of the heart, relationships feel nurtured and dynamic. There develops an inner understanding that helps the relationship grow and prosper. This ability expands beyond personal relationships to a broadened understanding of community and diverse cultures. Using the heart gives an unbiased perspective of world events, one based on justice.” - Nanette V. Hucknall, Founder of Higher Self Yoga

Approaching life with an open heart allows us to extend empathy, compassion, and support to others. In strong relationships, both people prioritize the commitment to remain open to what arises in the relationship. This openness is the foundation of mutual respect and appreciation that allows the relationship to prosper.

Moreover, as we connect to the Higher Self through the heart, we become more receptive to the experiences and viewpoints of others, and we are better equipped to approach situations with fairness and justice. Through the process of building and maintaining strong relationships, we learn more about ourselves, our values, and our aspirations, allowing us to develop a deeper sense of self-love and self-acceptance.
