1. Get clear on what you really want
The first step to transitioning to a new career is to understand what you’re looking for. Do you want to do something completely different? Or do you love the industry you’re in, but would like to make a change within it? Are you looking for more money? More flexibility? A job that aligns with your values? This self-reflection time is all about figuring out what’s really important to you and what needs to change. Journaling is helpful here.
2. Figure out what skills you’ll need to make the transition
Once you know what you want, think about the skills that will be necessary to get there. You don’t have to have all the skills right now, but having a sense of what you’ll need to develop will help you get a clearer sense of what the path forward might look like. This might mean going back to school for a few credits, picking up a new certification, or maybe just doing some independent study. What would be required? At this point, you’re doing research, not committing to anything.
3. Find a mentor or coach
When making a career transition, having someone in your corner who has already made a similar leap, or who has expertise in making big changes, can be incredibly valuable. They’ll have unique, practical experience to share, and they can help you stay accountable. Finding a mentor in your new industry, joining a career coaching program, or simply building a relationship with someone who has made a similar leap, can help you navigate the transition more smoothly.
4. Develop a financial plan
Money is often the biggest obstacle to making a career transition. If your new career direction doesn’t pay as well in the short-term, you’ll need to make adjustments to your budget and lifestyle. Before you quit your day job, it helps to have a financial safety net in place. This might mean aggressively paying off any debt, building up some savings to cover your expenses while you make the transition, or even finding a side hustle that relates to your new career while you’re still working your old one.
5. Ask your Higher Self
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused about your career direction, try asking your Higher Self. Through regular meditation and connection with the Higher Self, we can access a source of wisdom that is free of our surface biases and attachments to a particular outcome. This can be especially helpful when it comes to major life decisions like career changes. Learn how to talk to your Higher Self and use meditation to get guidance on your career path.
